What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a component of Chinese Medicine that has been used for 2500 years. The intent of Chinese Medicine is the same as Western Medicine - restore homeostasis. The purpose of acupuncture is to rebalance the flow of energy to encourage the body's nature healing and restore health and well-being.

What Acupuncture Tools are Used?

Various tools are utilized in acupuncture, including pins inserted at acupuncture points, cupping by a glass vacuum, electrical stimulation, and moxibustion. Through infrared light or heated charcoal, moxibustion delivers very warm sensation to acupuncture points. All acupuncture equipment is applied in a non-painful mannor to reduce pain and swelling.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

The underlying principle of Acupuncture is the flow of vital energy along defined paths in the body, known as meridians. Disruption of the flow of energy is responsible for pain or dysfunction. Needles insured at specific acupuncture points help reestablish this flow of energy through the body.

Modern science reveal that acupuncture needles stimulate the nervous system allowing the release of chemicals in the brain, spinal cord, and muscles. These chemicals change the perception of pain or trigger a chain reaction of chemicals and hormones that affect the body’s internal regulating system.

What Can Acupuncture Treat?

Medical acupuncture encompasses three areas of health care: the prevention of illness, promotion of health and well-being, and the treatment of various medical conditions. Oxford Rehabilitation Center utilizes acupuncture in adjunction with other medical treatment forms, such as physical therapy and manipulation therapy. At Oxford Rehab acupuncture helps treat:

  • Physical Problems: related to tension, stress and emotional conditions.
  • Neuological and Muscular Disorders such as:
    • headaches, low back pain, neck pain, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, various forms of tendinitis, sciatica, and osteoarthritis.

How Many Treaments Will I Need?

The number of treatments needed differs from person to person. Chronic or complex conditions may require one or two treatments a week for several months. Acute problems normally require few visits.

Will Health Insurance Cover Acupuncture?

Currently, acupuncture costs are covered by some insurance companies, while other companies do not yet recognize the value of acupuncture. More and more insurances are recognizing the value of providing coverage for medical acupuncture services. You can help by insisting that your insurance company offer you reimbursement for medically indicated acupuncture treatments before you accept their policy.
