Aquatic Therapy

Aquatic therapy consists of an exercise program performed in the water, which assist in patient healing and exercise performance. The pool is heated at 92-94o and equip with an underwater treadmill, resistance jet, and balance bar. Additional tools include floatation devices, tubing, and weights.

What are the benefits of the water environment?

  • The supportive nature of the water permits the performance of gentle movement without undue tension. It is an excellent base for exercise providing an anti-stress environment for movement. Gentle water exercises use the water's resistance to build muscle strength and flexibility; thereby assisting in rehabilitation after injury or illness.

  • Warmer water induces vasodilation, drawing blood into the target tissues, increases blood flow and delivers needed oxygen and nutrients to speed the tissue healing and removes cell wastes.

  • The warm water coupled with agitation or vibration against the skin can soothe and relax tense muscles, decreases muscle spasm, relieves pain, and can increase range of motion.

  • Beneficial for a wide variety of ages ranges from young children through to the elderly.

What is the Difference Between Water Exercise versus Land Based Exercise?

  • Every time you take a step, you put three to seven times the weight of your body on your joints. Take that same step in water, the natural buoyancy of H2O gently lifts the pressure off your joints and facilitates mobility and assists with exercise, while still allowing you to work your muscles.
  • Our pool is based on perfect anatomical positioning with resistance. Water exercise can benefit people who find weight bearing exercise difficult (or painful) on dry land. Its properties of decreasing impact while promoting movement allow a variety of individuals to benefit from this program.

Resistant Weight Exercises

  • Our warm pool is an ideal environment for relieving pain and stiffness for people who suffer from arthritis and/or painful muscle problems. Our elder population who lose their balance and becoming injured in falls find water therapy to be a safe and effective form of treatment.
  • Coordination and aerobic activities can also be performed in the pool. And, water equipment can assist with resistance exercise for strengthening.  Our underwater treadmill, resistant jets and floatation devices allow our therapist to strengthen your muscles and joints without gravity.
