Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE)

Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) is an assessment process that determines the individual's abilities in relation to critical work demands such as sitting, standing, walking, reaching, lifting and bending. It is an objective way to assess the physical abilities of any worker, injured employee or disability claimant.

This standardized examination is also commonly referred to as a physical capacity evaluation, work capacity evaluation, disability assessment.

The goal of a Functional Capacity Evaluation is to provide the individual, physician and employer with objective information for formulating a safe and appropriate return to work plan. Based on the individual's performance, recommendations are made regarding return to work, functional work day tolerances, and the classification of occupation that the client is able to perform safely, degree of strenuousness range from sedentary to very heavy, including any job modifications or identify the need for further management. When an individual does not have a job to return to, guidelines will be determined to assist in search for vocational options.

This can help support and define the treating physician's claim of disability and/or modification restrictions when returning to work.
